Deforestation for palm oil
The Indonesian government and private parties want to cut down forests to grow high paying cash crops such as palm oil and jatropha. But there are tribes living in these areas, who would be permanently effected by the deforestation. The environmentalists are of course against this. They have trained the locals to document the deforestation activities using video cameras, and use it as evidence in the courts to stop illegal logging. But what is even more interesting, similar to the Magarpatta example, is that some locals would be happy to sell their lands for logging purposes. They in fact want to use the video evidence to get a good price for their land, and the environmentalists want to support them for this too. Everybody benefits! How cool is that! Or, is it?
