Feedback for NGO Post

I tried sending message to friend added through website, but it was not working. Wonder what could the issue be?
Should we contact other users by their profile emails, or can we use messaging button on my friends page?

nitiniitk's picture

Thanks Ameet for pointing this out. We have corrected this, and it should be working now. When you send a private message to someone, it shows in their Inbox.

ameetdesh's picture

One more issue. When I was not logged in the website, I tried rating one of discussions on story page, this took me to login page. I logged in (once with remember me option checked, once without), it did not give any error message, but it did not log me in either. (which is when your name appears on top left). Login seems to work when done from the main site page. Let me know if you cant reproduce the bug.

ameetdesh's picture

Thanks nitin. Now, it is working, and looks very good :-)

nitiniitk's picture

I tried this, and I was able to log in (without the remember me option). Sometimes, the server behaves badly! Try again, and let me know (by personal email).

ameetdesh's picture

Quick tour looks very good :-)

ameetdesh's picture

was wondering if "admin links", should be renamed as "Edit post".. That would make it quite intuitive, in case somebody wants to re-edit the post.

admin's picture

Good suggestion Ameet. Done!

ameetdesh's picture

was wondering if it would be possible to add a story to more than one category.
also should there be category about 'economics', as it is the chief driver for developement.

admin's picture

1. No, it is not feasible to post a story to multiple categories. Please choose the one that is most relevant, and use tags to represent other attributes of the story.

2. It's a great suggestion. We'll soon have a category on economics.

ameetdesh's picture

Sometimes the 'picking' is not working... (despite clicking, it doesn't register a pick) I am not sure how to replicate the problem for others. Not sure if this is due to server error/ something else.

ameetdesh's picture

One interface suggestion, In the edit story box, it might good idea to include a 'hyperlink' button, so that ppl can insert a hyperlink, without coding href in html. Because many a time, apart from main page link, people might want to link to other relevent sites as well.

ameetdesh's picture

it is working for me now :-)

hkhatri's picture

I think, I can pick posts from from my laptop at home. But my firefox at office is giving my the following error. Even IE gives a similar permission denied error.

uncaught exception: Permission denied to call method XMLHttpRequest.open
myXMLHttpRequest()xmlhttp.php (line 33)
vote(12, 134, 0, "0601cc7fed29a4bfae66cfb98246aecf", 10)

nitiniitk's picture

One possibility is that you were not logged in. Or it could be a temporary server issue. We have tested this on Firefox/IE from several computers, so it should not be a bug in the website. If you still get the error, let's followup privately.

ameetdesh's picture

Another interface suggestion. For stories with URL, and description which fits completely within the summary box, would it be more convenient if clicking on their titles took us directly to the website, instead of story page? Digg.com works this way. If people want to read the story, they can click on "read more".

vishalcorner's picture

..

nitiniitk's picture

We really want to encourage discussions (and hopefully action), instead of just being a bookmarking service. The full story page is important for the discussions.

ameetdesh's picture

an aesthetic suggestion. The underline below the link names on NGopost is bit too thick. Could it be made thinner, and maybe of a lighter shade to be easy on eys.

ameetdesh's picture

Many a times, it is a hassle to create html tags to include a weblink in description. When we just paste the link, it does not become a hyperlink automatically , the way it does in comments. Can this be corrected?

ameetdesh's picture

the link to the profile of poster below the story is blank!! Please correct this bug.

ameetdesh's picture

I tried adding URL http://analytics.wikispaces.com/ to compose new story. But it says URL is invalid/blocked.

parul8ue's picture

When you click on the name/icon of the person who posted a story, new links appear: "View Profile" and "Add to my friends"/"Remove to my friends" (latter, only if you are logged in). Once you click on that, it does the necessary action.

Ameet, does this address the issue? pls correct me if I didn't understand it right ..

kodysworld's picture

Can a total number of users be placed in the main page which is updated regularly? It would be nice to see the NGOpost growth.

admin's picture

You can click on the "Users" at the top and see the number of pages that are needed to display all users (look at the bottom bar in that page). However since it is not something that adds a value to the users of the site, I would prefer not to add this explicitly on the front page.

admin's picture

It seems like wikispaces is banned in pligg, possibly due to spam issue.

vikasjain's picture

Last week i was there a barcamp bangalore at iimb. I had got a presentation on this site. can i get mail id of the person who gave the presentation as i have an idea.my id is mailvikas@usa.com

ameetdesh's picture

I am not able to embed videos with in embed code. e.g. This video from ibnlive. http://www.ibnlive.com/videos/63636/.html When I try doing it, the preprocessor strips off all code, and video can not be embedded.

ameetdesh's picture

a small bug. when we go to profile page of a member. Only GOPOST from ngopost are visible :) pls bring back the N.

admin's picture

I think this can happen when your browser screen isn't wide-enough (so the image hides behind the text). If you think this is some other problem, send me a snapshot and I'll look into this.

admin's picture

I just tried putting in the embed code from the site into your story, and it looks fine to me. The tag is stripped of but the tag remains and displays the video. Not sure why this is happening! May be it happens only in the summary view (since it has a character limit). In general, I think it is a good idea to have only text in the summary, like all other stories. Having videos in the summary view, while might be good for that particular story, disrupts the uniformity/theme of the site, and undermines other stories on the homepage or upcoming stories page.

Badhri's picture

I had posted a story "Problem of public urination" a week ago and was discussed too. But today I find that the story is not published. How was it discussed when it wasn't published?

I submitted a story "Why is education supply driven..." yesterday and that is yet to be published too. Am I making a mistake somewhere?

parulgupta8ue's picture

Any 'submitted' story appears on the NGO Post site immediately under the 'New stories' tab where users can read, 'Like' and discuss it. It gets 'published' (i.e. promoted to the main page - the 'Popular Stories' tab) only after it receives a certain number of votes. Democratic quality control :)

Badhri's picture

I don't know I am being the unlucky fellow to fall into all the pits in NGOpost or just a plain dumbo who can't understand a thing. But here is what faced.

I wrote a post, forgot to provide the URL in its field and posted. It got posted as an editorial. I find that later I am not able to go back and add the URL. If this is a limitation of NGOpost, I guess its a good enhancement. If there is already a way, I would like to know what it is!

nitiniitk's picture

Hi Badhri,
This is actually a limitation of NGO Post. The main URL cannot be changed after the story is posted, everything else can be. It is not trivial to provide this enhancement as you suggested because of the way our underlying system works. So in such cases, I suggest you just provide the URL in the content of your story.

k_25's picture

I'm not sure if this feature already exists or not.

1. Whenever a person replies to someone story, the original submitter should get an email about the response.

2. Whenever a person replies to someone else's (say x) reply, then x should get an email. Probably, the original submitter should also get an email.

Let me know if there already exists a way to do this. Otherwise, I feel it is too difficult to keep an eye on replies.

admin's picture

1. Yes, the submitter will get an email whenever any discussion is posted on his story (unless he specifically disables this option when submitting story).
2. Right now, it is not feasible. But allowing an option for anyone to "subscribe" to any story discussion, so that they can get an email alert whenever a discussion is posted on that story, is on our to-do list.

k_25's picture

I've now started to dislike NGO Post's homepage.

The information that is shown, along with huge bulky buttons, just do not add any value after visiting the home page for say initial 2,3 times and this info consumes the entire page. I understand we need to show information to the user, but, there should definitely be a way to hide that.

parulgupta8ue's picture

Hi Kapil, This page is intended for new visitors. It goes away when you login. Your browser can remember and keep you logged in, so you will never have to bother about it again.

Indira's picture

Hi, I am a new user of NGO. I run a small charitable organization called Action Volunteer Alliance. We send volunteers to Nepal. I have noticed that if you are looking for a story and want to add a location Nepal is not an option. I would love to see more locations added.

sandhya's picture

Great site...Thanks :)
Would be great to have a printable view of a posting.

parulgupta8ue's picture

thats valuable input, Sandhya. Will work on it!

Nirupama's picture

I found by chance some very good discussions and postings on vegetarianism here, but "animals" or "animal rights" and that kind of thing is not one of your content categories. This particular discussion was under "ecology..." Please do include animals as a content category because it is linked to so many other issues - right to life, food, employment/income generation/livelihood, science and experimentation etc . Thanks

hsriram's picture

I would like to bring to the attention of the administrators that there are some problems accessing certain functionality using IE. This includes discussions, expanding category list etc. All these throw some javascript error. Can someone look into this? Else let me know what I need to do at my end to fix access. I have to use Firefox to post this comment as I dont even get this view on IE. Thanks

parulgupta8ue's picture

thanks a lot for bringing this to attention Sriram. Will look into it asap!

vinchem's picture

Your is a great idea. I was wondering if you could bring in a few themes - say rural innovation or actually the area I was looking at Bio Gas - and create a wiki around that.

In each of these, there are many aspects. In case of biogas, the designs of reactor have had many improvements in say Vietnam and India. But most people are still using very old designs.

Simply creating a platform for crowd sourcing detailed knowledge would be very useful.

I would also like to be a part of the team.

Folks, looks as if the email newsletter sent is not formatted properly. I'm using outlook. Kindly make sure that if something is wrong, its fixed. Its a nice newsletter and easy readability is important.
Hope I don't miss anything.

parulgupta8ue's picture

Prashant - seems the problem is solved. I can already see your photo in the profile! :)

prashant_bang's picture

yeh, thanks

nitiniitk's picture

Content related to animals can be placed in Environment & Ecology category.

AdarshRao's picture

Hi, I have noticed that I am not able to view the 'Discussions' in various posts. ( Example: I can see that there are 2 comments on a post, but, when I scroll down, I am not able to view the comments.) Initially, I thought it was just the IE browser, and tried Firefox, but with the same result.

I have encountered this issue irrespective of whether I log into NGOPost or not.

A few other members are also experiencing the same issue. Could you please look into it?
Thanks,

nitiniitk's picture

If the comment is posted by an unapproved user, the comment will not be visible to other users. This is to prevent spam from showing up on the website.

parulgupta8ue's picture

Thanks for pointing this out Adarsh. As nitin explained this is a spam control mechanism, nonetheless, while approval on a comment is pending, the number of discussions annotated should be consistent with what is shown. We will fix this.

parulgupta8ue's picture

Hi Prasad, we recently changed our newsletter format based on your feedback. I hope you are able to view it properly now. Also we now include a web link to the newsletter in case there are formatting problems in the mail client .. that should help too. Please let us know if you are still facing problems!

Squirestone's picture

Hi, I'm very new to the site, but I wanted to tell you what I was hoping it would be and what I think it is after looking it over for an hour. I was hoping it would be a site where I could learn more about how to run and promote an NGO by talking with people who had been there, done that. ie Learn how best to use social media, PR, etc
What it seems to be is more of a place to post what NGOs do and ask for donations. As I see it you have 3 different demographics: People looking for NGOs to get involved with, People looking to learn about running and promoting an NGO, And People offering jobs, grants, opportunity>

Am I right? And also when you say "Story" is that what could be called an article, from another source?

I will continue to stumble around the site, thank you for this chance to question you.

parulgupta8ue's picture

Hi Terry, Thanks for taking the time to explore the site and give feedback. You are quite accurate in assessing the member demographics - most simply, NGO post is a platform for people interested in social welfare to share information and connect with other people working in the area. This information could be of any type - what NGOs do, job/volunteering/funding opportunities, policy discussions, advocacy and campaigns or any related questions or ideas thrown open to the community. Apologies for the confusion with the term "Story" its meaning is same as a user-submitted "post", where the post could be about any of the above topics.

And connecting with people "who have been there done that" is definitely a big big goal. So you can search for social media/online PR strategy experts amongst the users and contacts them one-on-one, or start a new discussion on this, which the whole community could contribute to!!

All the diseases are caused due to poor sanitery conditions it is useless to worry after something has happened now there is no way than the proper treatment to be given to the patients. You can improve the sanitery condition at and around the slum by taking proper care of waste material generating around the slum and think of its disposal which will definately reduce the diseases in the area.

Its a blessing in disguise. You have been presented with an opportunity to start an uniq business without any investment. Just use your land and start segregation centre with the help of poor people who are in search of daily jobs. Behavioural changes were observed like the students started reading books not only in the classroom but also at home.
