In Kolkata Flash floods destroyed about 10,000 houses in East Midnapore district, leaving almost two lakh people homeless.
The floods occurred due to excessive water released from dams that led to the collapse of river embankments in the district.
State Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia rushed to the flood-affected areas (Moina, Tamluk, Nandakumar and Panskura I and II) on Tuesday and held a meeting with the district magistrate and senior district officials to chart a rescue plan for those who have lost their homes.
Union Minister of State for rural Development Sisir Adhikary, Tamluk MP Suvendu Adhikary and all the MLAs also attended the meeting.
“We have urged the state government to provide financial support from the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) to the victims. Last year, our district did not receive any financial assistance from the state government after the Aila because the zilla parishad in our district is under the control of the Trinamool Congress. The Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM) had directed CRF fund of our district to North 24-Parganas district, which is under their control,” Suvendu told Mumbai Mirror.
