Joel Selanikio from DataDyne.org has developed a Java based application on PDAs for collecting health data from remote rural communities. In the absence of regular healthcare in such places, there is otherwise no option to archive health records of thousands of people, and ensure that they have received proper vaccination. With digitization of the data, it even becomes possible to analyze it to detect epidemic outbreaks in these communities. This is simply great! But technology is only a small fraction of the problem. It will be very interesting to know how appropriate social and organizational structures were put in place to ensure that the technology got used properly.
