NGO Post - The Pet Bharo Project-Solution to Poverty and Hunger in India

parulgupta8ue's picture

Hi Shanker, Thanks a lot for your detailed post. It is as important to share bad experiences for giving readers a true picture and I hope we can uncover the truth of the matter through discussion amongst knowledgeable people here. I have not taken the course and not used their nutrient solution for setting up a garden - so I must admit I don't know enough. That said, I did visit Pet Bharo project's school in Sandra Rickett Public school nr Hennur road in Bangalore and the caretakers there showed us in detail and explained the process. So that seems to address part of your concern. I have a few other friends who have been involved with this group and had good experiences - I will invite them and Col. Prakash himself to directly address your concerns here.

Dear Parul ... The MAIN POINT is that HYDROPONICS is NOT A SOLUTION TO DEAL WITH POVERTY! Otherwise, hydroponics as a technology is good for large scale farming of high value vegetables, fruits, etc. (Nothing new! It has been around for hundreds of years!)You simply cannot make this into a PROJECT FOR THE POOR MASSES! It is highly misleading!!!!

Also one should know that Hydroponics if NOT PROPERLY MONITORED is obviously VERY HARMFUL for the ENVIRONMENT. If everybody starts messing around with chemicals and dumping the excess stuff around them all our ground water will get contaminated. THIS TYPE OF "SIMLIFIED HYDROPONICS" WHERE THE NUTRIENT WATER RUNS OFF INTO THE GROUND IS BANNED IN EUROPE, AUTRALIA, USA, etc. We have enough serious ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS in India and globally. We DO NOT NEED more "QUACK" schemes to destroy our land and soil further. STOP THIS NONSENSE IMMEDIATELY!

I request NGOs and individuals concerned with ENVIRONMENT ISSUES to take notice of this SERIOUS ISSUE and DO NOT ALLOW POPLE TO START MESSING AROUND WITH "HYDROPONICS" UNLESS THEY HAVE PROPER KNOWLEDGE AND USED SCIENTIFIC METHODS TO "DISPOSE" THE EXCESS NUTRIENTS "SAFELY".

We should not allow these MERCHANTS OF GREED destroy our environment simply in order to gain some MISGUIDED FAME or earn few thousand rupees....EXPLOITING THE POOR!

A general note: why is there widespread poverty in India?
I live in the UK and even refugees in UK (most of whom do not have a job) live in comfortable houses, lead a very comfortable life and almost everyone has at least one car and drive even to shop. Even people with little or no salary in the UK have televisions, heaters, cookers, DVD players, games consols, other gadgets etc.
Perhaps poverty is related to the amount of energy resources available consumed such as oil, gas, coal etc?

You can grow vegetables using SOIL and compost in POTS. This DOES NOT REQUIRE TOO MUCH WATER. It requires the same amount as any other system. Also it would cost far less than HYDROPONICS that requires expensive inputs such as controlled evironment/polyhouse, substrate such as perlite, cocopeat, vermiculite, etc, nutrient fertilizer salts, constant monitoring, pesticides, etc. There are so many garden enthusiasts who give FREE ADVICE thru Internet Blogs to help beginners. One such great site is: http://geekgardener.wordpress.com/2009/11/25/petbharos-hydroponics-train...

In UK probably these so called 'poor' get substantial 'welfare support' from the government.

Poverty in India is primarily because our population is HUGE! It is therefore not practical for any government to be able to dole out money to so many people.

Some guy had recently calculated that an average family of 5 Members need Rupees 235/- foodstuff to have a couple of simple nutritous meals per day. Whereas 800 Milion Indians have an average income of Rs 20/- or less per day - this means a family of 5 are lucky to earn Rs 100/- per day.

This is the REAL situation as far as income goes - we have to also realize that people need drinking water, electricity, etc. Buying cars and heaters is a dream that even the middle classes in India cannot realize in their lifetime.

In fact India needs 800 million people to remain poor! India does not have the ENERGY, WATER, ROADS, SEWAGE, etc to support the lifestyle of the middle class or rich. So in a very perverted view the poverty is a blessing!

I am compelled to ADD this information to this BLOG as it is relevant to the fact that there is a massive capaign to MISLEAD the public about the "benefits" of Hydroponics by ISH using various media. One of the former students of ISH who is well informed on all aspects of the subject recently came across a very disturbing news item in a leading newspaper that happened to be advocating Hydroponics. In an attempt to shed light and bring out the TRUTH it is important that those interested in the subject please visit this blog for complete details:

Hey,
vsatsanga,
Have you read this,
http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/surinder-sudbreakthrough-in-...
Apparently some student from Delhi university in botany is working on hydrophonics as well. We could get more details from them as to how successful they have been.
